In-Line Figure Eight
Applications: Building anchors, attaching an object to the middle of the rope
The In-Line Figure Eight is a fast and effective way to create a strong, directional loop in the middle of the rope, while still maintaining the load bearing properties of the whole rope. It is directional, in that it will only support a load in one direction. For anchor building and hauling, this is often sufficient. In anchor building, the In-Line Figure Eight is part of a quick anchor system that uses the climber's end of the rope for an anchor. You can use it to include a proximal piece of protection in a belay anchor. How to tie: Grab a bight of the rope, and pass it behind the side of the rope from which the load will originate. Pass it across the front, and through the loop created by the bight and twist. Pull tight. The loop should lie against a strand of the rope, aimed down that strand.
